Thanks for all the links Gia, I can't believe I forgot to mention Sloodle! Don't tell Daniel and Jeremy! :)

Trevor, I think that's how I interpreted the "teacher presence" statement as well, but I'd certainly agree with Igori that it is crucial for educators to be involved in exploring and developing learning spaces. Maybe one of the original students will post a clarification of what they meant!

I agree with Igori - very interesting reading, Fleep, thank you for sharing this.

As for virtual worlds and LMS integration, things are slowly happening, especially in the Second Life community:

As a Sloodler I am happy to report that the number of tools for Second Life/Moodle integration are steadily growing. The tools are already being used to great effect by educators around the globe: in one case, for example, they helped to connect two groups of students, one in Dubai and one in Korea, for a "virtual exchange" project (see http://elearningproject.com/moodle/).
More information about Sloodle can be found at http://www.sloodle.org.

In this context, I should also point in the direction of Kip Yellowjacket who has been working on a link up between Second Life and the Claroline LMS. More info can be found on Kip's website at http://www.secondlifeenglish.com

@Igori Wheels My take on the statement "learning experiences that do_not_require the presence of a teacher" is that while it is true conversations are essential, virtual worlds offer opportunity to have environments that are engaging enough on their own to to allow exploration and learning to occur any time. If a student drops in at some odd hour and are on their own or maybe with a small group, it would be a shame if they had to wait for a "teacher" to show up before any learning could occur. The conversation or communication is important, but does not have to be "real-time" necessarily and may happen in a blog post, or a twitter comment or a note card drop in the learning space until the next time students and teacher meetup in the virtual space. I could be wrong, but that is how I interpret it.

great post Fleep. Just not sure about your point "learning experiences that do _not_ require the presence of a teacher" ... I think conversations between classes and teachers are essential (in real or in virtual world) ... therefore teachers must be present in vw's too and take part in the process (else, how could teachers be live long learners themselves?!)
